Rest In Peace, Poe

Poe Burke, 6, passed away unexpectedly approximately 9 PM on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 after a brief and undiagnosed illness. He was known by many nicknames and aliases, such as Poe, PoPo, Pofalump and sometimes even, that damned cat. But he will be missed by his entire family. He is survived by his brother, Bloom, also 6, his parents, Brendan and Melissa and his younger brothers, Walter and Byron Burke. Poe goes on to the Happy Hunting Grounds where he will reside with his grandfather, Walter Dennis Burke, his dogs, Zachary and Dylan and fellow cat, Willard.
Poe and his brother were brought home from the ASPCA in June 2004. They resided for a short while as kittens in Rosendale, NY before moving to the state of Maine in 2005. Poe and his brother took the arduous move in stride and soon found that the climate suited them and they fit right in.
Poe will be remembered as a batter of soda caps, a remarkably pliant and patient cat, a good mouser, a great napper and a friendly and attentive host to any guests that stopped by the house.
A lover of nature, one of Poe’s favorite spots were on the rug in front of the patio door watching the birds outside and the front porch from where he ran past people’s legs as soon as the door was opened, winter or summer. No matter what the weather, Poe had to sample the day from the enclosed porch.
Poe did have one run-in of a serious nature when he accidentally scratched his baby brother Byron’s head, but Byron and the rest of his family soon forgave him. Byron will forever have a faint scar to remind him of his brother, Poe.
Poe will also be remembered for his vampire kitty imitation, his role in the ‘where’s my baby’ practical joke, for waking us up by jumping into bed in the mornings and for his remarkable patience in teaching a soon to be daddy of how to diaper and swaddle a baby.
Poe’s last words were three small meows which hopefully meant, “I love you and will miss you,” as his family all know that we will feel the same way.
