Wrestling At The High School

Byron and Walter and I went out a couple of weeks ago to a small local wrestling event at the high school. Yeah, I know, pretty corny, but we had alot of fun. We watch wrestling together sometimes during the weekend (Melissa calls it my man's soap opera... which it is as the storylines are usually more interesting than the wrestling sometimes... but I've watched wrestling since I was a teen...) and so it was fun watching every trope known to pro wrestling being played out on the small stage. Never before had I had so much fun watching guys around my age and fairly out of shape too, stage this stuff. We got to sit in the bleachers about 15 feet away from the ring and so got to hear them talk and give stage direction among themselves. These guys were fun but weren't able to sell too much easily. They all looked like they were having fun anyways!
There was the egotistical egomaniac coward being led by a self serving interfering manager with dubious facial hair and fashion sense, there were the tough guys who wore fluorescent colored Wayfarers a la the Hart Foundation of the 80's, there was the hero/ face who went after the guy who was a coward who hid behind the crowd (yes, he climbed up into the stands with the audience... even stepped on Walter's jacket!), the flabby out of shape playboy and the country boy in overalls who won the match and belt in Hillbilly Jim fashion (and let the kids dance in the ring with him afterwards in celebration!).
We got to see singles and tag team matches, a six man tag match and a battle royal for the first ever heavyweight belt for the North Atlantic Wrestling Association. Plus Tony Atlas, former WWE wrestler was there really showing his age (but still pretty massively built.) Walter got his picture taken with him and alot of autographs and Byron got himself a wrestling luchador mask. Best money I've spent in a long time!
